This sepia-toned photograph of Charles Davenport (1809-1901) was taken by Alva Pearsall of Brooklyn, New York. Pearsall had his studio in Brooklyn from 1872 until 1893.
Davenport Memorial City Hall is named for Charles Davenport, a native of Bath, the son of hatter Benjamin Davenport and his wife Lucy Eames.
Charles Davenport worked for a variety of businesses within Bath that were concerned with various aspects of the maritime industry. Like many businessmen in the city, he eventually became financially involved with the construction of vessels, but Davenport also participated in the insurance business and was the president of Bath Savings Institution for more than 40 years.
Davenport took an active role in city government and various local philanthropic efforts. He and his wife Catherine Trevett Duncan (1814-1907) had five children, including George Patten Davenport. George Davenport, named for Captain George Patten who was instrumental in the development of Charles' career and fortune, was the son who left property and money to the City of Bath for the construction of Davenport Memorial City Hall.
